Team Ugu conquers women’s volleyball

This time around, they ensured they returned home with the championship trophy

It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it for the Ugu women’s volleyball team, as they were crowned the 2024 champions at the KZN Salga Games recently.

For this team, it was an improvement from last year, where they finished in third place. This time around, they ensured they returned home with the championship trophy and gold medals. They defeated Team King Cetshwayo District 2-0.

The games, which ended last Sunday, were played at the Indoor Sports Centre of the Durban University of Technology Steve Biko Campus in Durban.

According to the winning coach, Mzamo Shinga, the road to victory was not easy as it needed strength and courage to reach the highest level of the competition.

En route to victory, Team Ugu defeated Team Umkhanyakude District 2-0, followed by another 2-0 win against Team Amajuba District, before they defeated the host, Team eThekwini 2-1 as they wrapped up the group stages.

In the semi-final, they edged out Team Zululand 2-0, and later on, in the final, crushed Team King Cetshwayo 2-0. Coach Mzamo said the game, which was a great test of character, was against Zululand in the semi-final.

“It’s a proud moment for these girls and an amazing improvement from last year. I am speechless, and for now, I have to enjoy the excitement with the girls,” said Mzamo.

He said he realised they were going to win after they won the first set, and the opponents started to make the wrong rotation decisions and misleading instructions.

He emphasised they will not rest as all eyes will be on them at the next instalment of these games next year.

Meanwhile, the women’s football team lost in the final and collected silver medals. Another silver was won by the karate team.
